Recording gives us a unique opportunity to:-
• see behind the façade
• create a permanent record before the opportunity is lost
• look for things which owners may not have noticed or may not understand and interpret them
• help owners to appreciate the historical importance of their home
• compare with other buildings
• add to the understanding of local buildings

1 Here what looks like a single storey extension is actually the earlier building.

Another example
From the outside this looks like a late 18 century/early 19 century cottage with additions.
But the back wall is the remains of a single storey building which is possibly 400 years older, complete with tree trunk.
